Among sandwich enthusiasts, Omaha is widely acclaimed for being the birthplace of the Reuben. This fire hydrant, in downtown Omaha, has been protecting Reubens and those who eat them for fifty four years.

This blog is a collection of pictures of urban infrastructure, typically fire hydrants and manhole covers that are inscribed with dates. Why? Because these things have withstood floods, suburbanization, Urban Renewal, riots, gentrification, shifting modes of transportation and every other creative and destructive force that has been thrown at cities through the decades. I think they deserve some credit.
I cannot believe that the Reuben was born in Omaha!
ReplyDeleteAre you kidding, with all that beef? I'm surprised more adventures in beef consumption didn't come out of Omaha. Actually, I'm sure they did. That could be another blog entirely.
